To our friends and supporters of Margaret House Refuge - Thank you for your loyal and ongoing support!
To our friends and supporters of Margaret House Refuge,
Not only are you helping to keep this valuable community resource functioning, you are also helping Margaret House Refuge to grow to support vulnerable
people in our own community find safety, comfort, help and hope for the future.
Unfortunately, Margaret House and Young Crisis Accommodation Centre are under more pressure than ever, with affordable housing for clients being more and more difficult to find.
YCAC have supported 257 clients to date (up from 213 last year. 118 of these clients were fleeing from Domestic Violence. Margaret House has been used to capacity. Residents of the house are staying for longer periods due to a shortage of available rental properties. MargaretHouse has a wait list for families, despite the modifications to the house to be able to accommodate 2 families at once.
YCAC currently have 96 open cases and in May up to 103 cases they were unable to exit due to no outcome for a housing solution for these clients.
In response to this, Margaret House Refuge are very excited about ideas we have put in place for securing more crisis accommodation in the Hilltops region.
We have had the opportunity to submit 2 grant applications to the COVID—19 Sexual, Domestic and Family Violence Infrastructure Grant. We have all fingers and toes crossed that we may be successful with this to help secure more accommodation.
For Margaret House Refuge, we have come up with a plan to make use of the garage and space in the back yard.
We propose to put in a ‘Prefabulous’ home (a small modular home made in Wagga by Prefabulous and craned in on site). The small home will have private entry and provide emergency accommodation for single women aged 16+. This will be of great benefit to Margaret House as the 2, 2 bed spaces will be kept free for women with children.
The garage will be turned into a games room for the children in residence at Margaret House, additional storage and a meeting place for residents and case workers.
The backyard will be landscaped with a cubby house for the children.
We are also working closely with another housing group in Young to provide fit for purpose all inclusive emergency accommodation (men, families and people with disabilities).
Margaret House would like to thank Businesses who have helped with planning the next stage of accommodation for Margaret House Refuge. Thank you to Prefabulous Homes in Wagga, Craig Filmer, DA Busters in Young, Adam Tanner Builders and Alex Dalglish, Somewhere Landscape Architects.
Food Drops
Please do not forget about food drops to YCAC!
This small gesture has such a big impact for clients who cannot cook for themselves. A home cooked meal is such a comfort, especially in the cold months of winter.
If you are not already participating in donating home cooked meals to YCAC, please consider this!
Small meals in take away containers that can be frozen and preferably reheated in a microwave please deliver to YCAC in Boorowa Street (next to Rivers) every Wednesday before noon.
Please call Anna Hayes on 0476786844 for more info.
Field Day Fundraiser
The South West Merino Field Days are back on and we once again are very grateful to have the opportunity to cater for this event!
Please put in your diaries the date—August 31st at the Harden Showgrounds. We cater for over 700 meals and any help is very much appreciated.
Please contact Aaron Seamanon 0488 915 315 if you can help with this event in any way - cooking slices, sandwiches or coming for a few hours to help out at the canteen.
It is one of Margaret House Refuge’s major fundraisers and we would love your help!!
Our heartfelt thanks go once again to our quilting friends in Sydney.
The group call themselves ‘The Rainbow Makers’. The name came from a project where children were asked what they wanted to be when they grew up. The group then made a quilt to represent the ambition. One of the boys said he wanted to be a rainbow maker and now this is what the group is called.
Members of the group have come to visit us in Young, bringing with them beautiful quilts which now are on all the beds at MargaretHouse.
We are about to receive more quilts made by the Rainbow Makers. These quilts will be given to residents (Mum’s and children) when they leave the refuge as a good will gesture to take to their new homes.
They are also in the process of hand stitching a beautiful quilt that we can raffle at the SWS Merino Field Days.
